How to Choose the Right EMI Tenure (Without Overpaying)

allfreecalculators.in guide · Updated July 2026

Picking a loan tenure is a trade-off. A longer tenure lowers your monthly EMI but increases the total interest you pay. A shorter tenure does the opposite. Here is a simple way to decide.

1. Start with what you can comfortably afford

As a rule of thumb, keep all EMIs under about 40% of your take-home income. Use the EMI calculator to try a few tenures and see the monthly figure.

2. Compare total interest, not just the EMI

Example: a ₹10,00,000 loan at 9% for 10 years has an EMI of about ₹12,668 and roughly ₹5.2 lakh total interest. Stretch it to 20 years and the EMI drops to about ₹9,000 — but total interest nearly doubles to about ₹11.6 lakh.

3. Match the tenure to the asset

Short-lived purchases (phones, gadgets) should use short tenures. Long-lived assets (a home) can justify longer tenures.

4. Prepay when you can

Even one extra EMI per year can shave months off your loan. Recalculate after each prepayment.
